a letter from lucy
I founded The Honest Kitchen in 2002. I had begun making a homemade raw diet for my Rhodesian Ridgeback, Mosi, but found it quite time consuming and frequently ended up with a very messy kitchen! I set out to find a way to make fresh, natural dog food much quicker and simpler to prepare - and the answer was to dehydrate the ingredients to remove only the moisture so that the finished product would be shelf stable, and a concentrated form of nutrition.
Our true passion is animals.
Our animals are part of everything we do at The Honest Kitchen – from helping me taste test our new recipes, (yes – I taste everything myself and always have!) to ensuring we all get our lunch-time fresh air and exercise, to just being plain silly and brightening up our day with a moment of mad play, a funny sleeping position or an intent stare at participants in a very important meeting.
We’re also pretty passionate about our products.
Our dehydrated pet foods are made from the most pristine, whole food ingredients available. The kitchen is the heart of our company, and the place where each new recipe is dreamed up. We make our natural dog food and cat food as a labor of love and have put our heart and soul into building a strong brand, based on the foundations of product integrity and honesty.
Our principles are simple.
We only produce our pet foods using the gentle method of dehydration to remove just the moisture from our whole food ingredients. We always try to raise the bar in choosing our raw ingredients, and buy all our ingredients directly from our suppliers we never leave procurement to anyone else. We respect our planet by choosing organic ingredients whenever we can and always choose sustainability over cost – like our free-range chicken line-caught wild haddock, fair-trade quinoa, non-GMO produce and recycled, Sustainable Forestry Initiative certified, compostable packaging.
